The National Weather Service says a major winter storm is forecast to produce heavy snow and significant ice starting in the central U.S. and moving east.

This morning starts out dry and not quite as chilly as the previous weekend as temps start out in the upper 50s. A cold front will move through this afternoon bringing showers and gusty wind to the area.

A major winter blast of snow, ice, wind and plunging temperatures in the U.S. stirred dangerous travel conditions from central and southern states all the way to the East Coast early Monday, prompting schools and government offices in several states to close.
