Republicans in a Georgia Senate committee have advanced a bill that would force the city of Atlanta to let the Fulton County sheriff use the city jail for no more than the cost of maintaining it

The BriefA new proposal to force the city of Atlanta's detention center to house inmates at the Fulton County Jail has been advanced by Republican senators.Dozens of people have died in custody at the jail since 2021 and a report by the Department of Justice said the troubled facility had unconstitutional living conditions.

On average, 1,600 corrective maintenance work requests are submitted and completed each month across all three (3) jail facilities," the county said.

The proposal would force the city of Atlanta to allow the Fulton County sheriff to use the city jail for no more than the cost of maintaining it.
