Bape was founded by Nigo, real name Tomoaki Nagao, in 1993 by in the Ura-Harajuku district of Shibuya, Tokyo. At that point, Nigo was already a fixture in the Japanese streetwear scene.

Nigo, of course, is the founder of Bape, aka A Bathing Ape, and named the brand after the influential sci-fi flick from 1968. Nigo sold Bape in 2011 and ceased any involvement two years later.

With Bape infiltrating the United States market, thanks in large part to the help of Pharrell, he and Nigo officially teamed up to launch a Billionaire Boys Club/Icecream in 2003.
