AUSTIN (KXAN) — Crews have successfully installed a temporary barrier at Longhorn Dam to prevent a further drop in water level at Lady Bird Lake after one of the dam’s gates failed Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Austin Water said during regularly scheduled work this afternoon, one of nine gates at Longhorn Dam failed in the open position leading Lady Bird Lake levels to begin dropping.

Austin Water said one of the nine gates at Longhorn Dam "failed in the open position" during scheduled work earlier Tuesday afternoon. By 5 p.m., Lady Bird Lake's water level had dropped two feet.

The bridge will connect Longhorn Shores, Canterbury Park and a peninsula near Holly Shores, meeting to form a 76-foot-wide plaza over the lake that will feature bike racks, benches and trees.
