Anthony Mackie caught backlash after downplaying the "America" aspect of his character, Captain America.

Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson took to the skies as the Falcon for the first time in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There’s been considerable change in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Wilson is now Cap and leading his own movie subtitled Brave New World.

“It’s always apropos for me when awards season comes up,” Mackie said, “Because I know I’ve done at least four performances that could have been nominated — if not for a Golden Globe, then an Oscar or an Emmy. Captain America is my Oscar, because I’ve been overlooked so many times in my career.”

Mackie, who is taking over the role of Captain America from Chris Evans in the upcoming film, said that he doesn’t think the star-spangled superhero “represents” America.
