May 31, 2023 · Gebel Barkal is one of five sets of little-known ruins along both sides of the Nile River in Sudan. The others are Kurru, Nuri, Sanam and Zuma. Covering more than 37 miles (60 km) along the Nile, they include tombs, pyramids, and palaces dating between 900 BCE and 350 CE and so date both the Napatan and Meroitic cultures.

The archaeological sites of Gebel Barkal, Kurru, Nuri, Sanam and Zuma in the Nile Valley testify to the Napatan and Meroitic civilisations. They host a series of pyramids, tombs, temples, palaces, burial mounds and funerary chambers.

Nuri is an archaeological site in Sudan on the southeast side of the Nile. Close to it, there are pyramids belonging to Nubian kings. All these remains belonged to the ancient city Napata, the first capital of the Nubian kingdom of Kush.
