The Sun’s Long-Lived Active Regions Are Massive Flare Factories—But We Don’t Know Why

The lone active region visible on the Sun on April 24-26 put on a fine display, with tangled magnetic field lines swaying and twisting above it. Active regions are areas of intense and complex magnetic fields on the Sun that are often associated with solar eruptions, though this region has not erupted with any significant solar storms while on the Earth-facing side of the Sun. Seen in extreme ultraviolet light by our Solar Dynamics Observatory, the magnetic field lines above the active region ar

Solar Activity Report: December 22-28, 2025 Solar activity was low at the start of the week, with X‑ray flux generally confined to the low C‑class range aside from a few higher C‑class events. Activity increased markedly on December 27, highlighted by an M5.1 flare from active region 14325 at the east limb and a C9.9 flare from active region 14318 near the disk center. M‑class activity continued into December 28, when active region 14325 produced an impulsive M1.3 flare and active region 14317 g

Solar Activity Report: October 13-19, 2025 Solar activity persisted at moderate levels throughout the week, with M-class flares occurring daily. Active Region 14246 was the dominant source, contributing 25 of the 28 M-class flares recorded during the reporting period. The most intense event was an M4.8 flare on October 15. Notably, even after crossing the west limb on October 18, the region continued to produce M-class activity, including M1.0 and M1.8 flares on October 19. There were numerous C

In early February 2026, the Sun unleashed a torrent of back-to-back solar flares. One specific active region on the Sun was responsible for over 50 of them! Here’s a close up look at this very busy active region through the eyes of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the Sun 24/7 from Earth orbit.👇 🤩 | NASA Solar System Exploration

In the US, solar energy installations are on the rise, but for solar to be a viable energy replacement, it requires a lot of open land, which can damage ecosystems and disrupt farming. Urban areas, however, might have a solution. Find the full video on our YouTube channel. This video is presented by @Delta. #Climate #Solar #Energy #ClimateSolutions | Vox

Solar X Flare as Famous Active Region Returns (APOD: 2024 May 28) Video Credit: NASA, Solar Dynamics Observatory https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap240528.html Explanation: It's back. The famous active region on the Sun that created auroras visible around the Earth earlier this month has survived its rotation around the far side of the Sun -- and returned. Yesterday, as it was beginning to reappear on the Earth-facing side, the region formerly labeled AR 3664 threw another major solar flare, again in

Three distinct solar active regions with towering arches rotated into view over a three-day period from Sept. 24-26, 2017. Charged particles spinning along the ever-changing magnetic field lines above the active regions trace out the magnetic field in extreme ultraviolet light, captured here by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. Extreme ultraviolet light is typically invisible to our eyes, but is colorized here in gold. To give some sense of scale, the largest arches are many times the size of E

The winner of the solar Olympics 🏅 In this video, you're seeing sped-up footage of the most productive region on the Sun this year so far, active region AR4366. The loops of hot plasma shown here reach temperatures of around 600,000 Kelvin, or a scorching 1 million degrees Fahrenheit. This imagery was captured by our Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) between Feb. 1 and Feb. 9 in 2026. During this window, AR4366 produced 75 M-class and six X-class flares, the two largest classes of solar flares.

☀️ Three Giant Active Regions Detected on the Sun — Possible Geomagnetic Storms Ahead 🌞 Astronomers have spotted three massive active regions emerging on the Sun’s eastern limb (November 3, 2025). These regions were already active on the far side, releasing several powerful CMEs observed by solar satellites. 🔭 Experts warn that as these sunspot groups rotate toward Earth, they could trigger strong solar winds, geomagnetic storms, and brilliant auroras visible at lower latitudes. Scientists are

☀️A powerful solar flare lasting 37 minutes has erupted on the SunAccording to specialists, the event is not expected to affect Earth for now. However, in about two days, the active sunspot region could rotate into a position facing our planet. If that happens, geomagnetic storms and disruptions to communications and satellite systems may occur.

In May 2024, the strongest solar storm in twenty years raged. An international team led by ETH Zurich observed it. Their findings are now helping to improve space weather forecasts. In brief Researchers able to track for the first time how a particularly active region of the sun develops over three solar rotations using two space probes. Such observations help to better predict space weather. The super -active region triggered the strongest solar storm observed in the last twenty years in May 20
