All right... This one is going to set off the "Is Dezi in there" crowd. I wasn't going to share this one, but I decided to under the "If you see something, say something" context. I found a blanket in the entrance of the adit of an old abandoned gold mine. That's a new one for me. In all honesty my assumption was and still is, for some strange reason someone threw it in there, or perhaps it was dragged in there by an animal or something. It's actually rare that I follow any marked walking tracks when out exploring. But on this day in the area north of Walhalla I did, and there were some Blackberries trying to take over the track, so I took to them with my modern day Victorian machete. It would even be funny, if it wasn't true. Ignore my back pack looking about as big as me. I wasn't going too far this time so I just crammed my pick, scoop, first aid kit, snake bite kit, waders etc into in and took off. I would love to do this fo

I have no idea how this came to be in the bush between Cobbannah and Dargo. It was a couple hundred metres away from any walking track and close to 100 metres or so from a road. None the less, I dont care. I also dont care if it's because of a medical issue otherwise. Put simply, dont be whoever it was that put this here. Pick up your mess! Removing this certainly wasn't what I was out in the bush to do that day, but it's done now regardless! | Ricky Muir

This old mine hiding in plain sight on the way to and from Dargo is so darn obvious.... Yet I had travelled that road for years before noticing it 🤣 I had to quickly pull over on my way past to grab a little footage. I couldn't help myself. Have you spotted it before? I'm actually not familiar with the story here. My assumption is that it was driven into the hill with intent to intercept a reef further in, but never made/found it. I gave this Blue Tongue Lizard a guarded convoy when I got home last night. Poor thing was basking in the sun when a cranky Indian Myna started squawking at him and attacking him. Once I scared the bird off I gave the Blue Tongue space as it was clearly already on edge with plenty of tongue display and a flattened out body. He was mighty cautious if me, keeping an eye on me as he went, but as soon as shelter was close, he bailed quick smart. I love having these little guys hanging around :), not

A sad reminder of the harsh realities of life in the Victorian High Country in the Gold rush era. These two little marked graves, which I assume were of children, and the one adult grave in the background are the only three remaining marked graves of the Store Point burial ground way out in what is the middle of nowhere in the Victorian High Country these days. This site was never a gazetted cemetry however it was used between the 1870's and 1910 with all records being destroyed in the 1939 fire

Excuse the sound of the metal detector. I set out today to where I saw the Dingo several weeks back to do some detecting in the old gold workings at that spot. No sign of my Dingo, but this huge Black Snake was happy to share the area with me. When I was last there, there was no sign of any recent prospecting. This time however, there was plenty of evidence of others prospecting. I'd suggest as late as the weekend just being. My little spot has been discovered 🤣 No gold today, I really only had

Hiding away in the bush North of Bairnsdale in East Gippsland is the remainder of this late 1800's hand dug dam that once provided water to a boiler to create steam to power a 10 head stamper battery to process gold. While its easy to mistake for a natural bog these days, it certainly didnt begin life that way and had a 1 million gallon capacity to supply the mining effort nearby. This old gold mine shaft was very obvious from the mullock heap surrounding it. Had it not been capped years ago, the obvious shaft inside the mullock would stand out like a cliff face elsewhere. However, because it was capped, organic leaf matter builds up over it, retains moisture and slowly it corrodes away hiding under a camouflage of sticks and leaves. A recent controlled burn has removed the leaf matter and the cap has revealed itself to now be little more than a trap door. Had it still be

I read it a lot when posting photos or videos of old mine shafts hidden far away from where most people would ever go and my usual response is that caps can and do lead to a far more dangerous situation where eventually the cap rots or corrodes underneath a layer of organic matter giving the illusion of firm ground but actually being a flimsy false floor ready to collapse when weight is applied. Last night I posted a few pictures of the hike wife and I did into Conglomerate Falls at Bryce's Gorge yesterday. It was so hard to take a picture to capture how awesome I really was. So I saved the best for last. Here is a quick video for some audio pleasure and to help show the sheer scale of the cliffs in the area. It really was spectacular. The third and final adit in a series of three all closely located together on the one reef that a mate and I came accross last weekend. This one had a small shaft out the front with a drive into one side. The entrance to the adit has partially collapsed at some stage, but just past the entrance there is a winze to the right and the tunnelling appears to be on a slant as it goes in further, I highly expect there to be a stope in there further.
